One day in Oxford

We want to make the most of our last months here, and now that the weather is amazing, we spent a perfect day in the beautiful Oxford, worldwide known for its University. Yes, this city has colleges in every single corner with its harmonious architecture of golden stone. We took the train early in the morning from Birmingham, and in some more than an hour we reached Oxford; the return tickets cost £20 each. From Paddington station in London there are trains as well and the tickets are around the same price.

The train station in close to the city centre on foot, so from there we started our trip to discover the city. Every corner is beautiful and while walking you come accross these little castles that are the colleges, they are everywhere, with courtyards of grass and flowers and small towers. It is impossible to walk the streets and not realise all the history they have.

Most of the colleges can be visited for around £2, although some of them were closed due to the graduations that were taking place that day. Anyway, this fact added charm to the visit, it was worth because we could see some aspects behind this important ceremony; the elegant dresses, the mortarboard, the gown, the group pictures...

We spent the morning wandering the streets and we went up the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin tower, for £4 each. From the top we enjoyed an amazing paroramic view of the city. Close to it, there's the famous Radcliffe Camera, a reading room for the Bodleian library, the astonishing art work from the English Gothic. The access was only for students, because it's exams time, but we could admire it from the outside.

We went to the Botanical gardens and Magdalen College, and then we visited the famous Christ Church College,  the largest college of University of Oxford, where many distinguished people has studied, as Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. Unfortunately, as the graduation ceremonies were taking place, the Hall, which inspired the dining room of Howards in Harry Potter, was closed to the public and we couldn't visit it. We saw the cathedral and the courtyards; everything charming. The tickets cost £5,5.

As we arrived to the city very early, we could saw all this places before lunch. We went near Oxford Castle for lunch and then we sat down at the base of  the "Mound", a little hill next to the castle, to enjoy the sun. To go up the Mound people have to pay £1, and, in my opinion, it isn't worth climbing. It's very cheap, I know, but the views are not as good as we though, we almost could see nothing interesting from there, really.

Next, we went to the Ashmolean museum that, as many museums in the UK, the entrance is free. It has a great collection of archeological pieces of different ancient civilisations, as well as, beautiful art works.

The rest of the afternoon was dedicated to wander the streets, discovering wonderful corners: more colleges,  gardens, charming shops... Before going back to the train station, we stopped in a cafè for a delicious carrot cake. Yummy!
